Musings From an "Uncommon" Weekend Retreat
Seventy+
sages in education gathered to share, learn, and network at the Corwin’s
Author’s Retreat held at the Terranea Resort overlooking the Pacific.
It is near
impossible to include all of the substantial ideas and inspirational messages.
Here is a brief summary of some noteworthy ones.
Ainsley Rose: Top priorities in Hattie’s Visible
Learning: Clear goals, engaged/collaborative learning, and feedback on progress.
Look for the evidence and then use the data to make an impact on learning.
Tom Guskey:
It is essential to find the balance between what is fair and what is
meaningful in assessment and grading.
Jim Popham: Teacher evaluation and professional
development should be designed to improve student learning. This requires
balanced and rigorous systems that support teacher development and benefit schools
as a whole
Eric Sheninger: Communicate, share, network, and
leverage to maximize your potential. Thanks for Eric’s unbridled dedication to
the value of technology in teaching, learning, and leading.
John Almarode: Use what we know about cognition and
learning to “Captivate, Activate and Invigorate the Student Brain”
Jim Knight: Explained and illustrated 6 big
ideas in high impact instructional coaching, professional learning, and
leadership. Effective improvement plans require agreement and commitment to the
process.
Russell Quaglia Showed data gathered from thousands
of students to support his belief that we can and must learn from students
because they are the potential not the problem in educational reform.
And a shout out to the Corwin leadership: Mike Soules, Lisa Shaw, Kristen Anderson, Katie Stoddard, and all their team members for a spectacular conference. And apologies to those I missed- catch ya’ next year!
